MASCS '09 Spring Classic Notes
Fort Atkinson, WI (April 15, 2009) – The Mid-American Stock Car Series will begin its 17th season this Sunday, April 19th at Rockford Speedway in Love’s Park, IL as part of their 32nd Annual Spring Classic.
Lyle Nowak will be looking to capture his second straight Spring Classic win. One year ago, Don Wood seemed to be in control of Mid-American’s season opening event until he lost his brakes and slammed into the turn one wall. Nowak inherited the lead and did not look back. He also found victory lane in the 2006 event.
As Nowak looks to start a streak, Bill Prietzel will look to keep one alive. Prietzel has been fast qualifier at the Rockford spring race for the past three seasons.
However, setting fast time in those three events has mired Prietzel deep in traffic. Unforunately for Prietzel, he has not been able to salvage a top ten finish in the past three seasons when attempting to come through the invert. Prietzel was 12th in last season’s event, as well as in 2006, and went out in a lap one wreck in 2007, finishing 24th.
Prietzel will be looking for a fast start as he attempts to capture his fourth MASCS championship; one year after James Swan completed the historic feat. While Prietzel will not have to deal with Swan in ’09, he will have to face a plethora of challengers, including last year’s runner-up Kyle Shear.
The 2007 MASCS Rookie of the Year had two fourth place finishes in both Rockford races last season. It will be a busy Sunday afternoon for Shear and his team as they prepare for the Big 8 Late Model race to be run on the same day.
Also pulling double duty in those divisions will be ’06 MASCS Rookie of the Year Jake Finney. Finney enjoyed his best season with Mid-American in 2008, grabbing two wins on his way to a fifth place finish in the final season standings. He had a tough run in the spring race at Rockford last season (17th) but recovered nicely in the fall with a top five run.
With a focus on two former MASCS Rookies of the Year now turned title contenders, some of the spotlight should be shifted to the drivers battling for the 2009 MASCS ROY title.
Justin Neisius will make his first ever trip to Rockford Speedway with his cousin Paul this Sunday. Justin will be eligible to run for Rookie of the Year honors in ’09. The two Elko Speedway standouts will join Mid-American this season in hopes of having strong top ten runs all the way though. In their last event with Mid-American at Oktoberfest, both Neisius’ faired well. Justin finished fourth and Paul finished sixth.
Contending with Justin Neisius for the ROY title will be Matt Pyburn. Pyburn is a former super stock champion at Marshfield Motor Speedway and will also be making his first ever trip to Rockford Speedway. Pyburn should be well prepared as he will be piloting a Bak-Kar chassis, the same make as Nowak.
As those two ROY contenders make their Mid-American debuts in unfamiliar territory, one driver will be making his debut in his own backyard.
Mike Beyer of Machesney Park, IL was the only Mid-American driver present at last week’s open test at Rockford Speedway. Beyer has many years of experience racing late models at Rockford and has collected a multitude of wins along the way. He also won several limited late model championships at Madison International Speedway.
Drivers won’t be the only debutants on Sunday. The ARP Next Generation Body, or NGB, will see its first action on the track with several drivers supporting the new tin. Kyle and Troy Shear Jr., Crystal Wood, and Bret Widdis will be showcasing the body at Rockford.

Sunday’s race will also begin qualifications for the 2009 B&B Race Engines give away program. Thanks to the generosity of companies such as B&B Race Engines and Scorpion Racing Products of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mid-American will give away an engine to one lucky competitor at the 2009 banquet. To qualify drivers must run 75% of the races in 2009, run all participating sponsors decals and purchase a 2010 MASCS membership prior to the banquet.
Spectator gates at Rockford Speedway open at 11 a.m. Sunday morning with qualifying scheduled to begin at 11:15 for the Big 8 Late Models with Mid-American to follow. Racing is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
