Hiatus from Mid-American Doesn’t Faze Haese in Vercauteren Memorial
Friday: Nowak Says No Way at Norway
FRANCIS CREEK, Wis., (June 27, 2009) – Gregg Haese spent Saturday morning preparing for the Mid-American Stock Car Series’ running of the Vercauteren Memorial just as any racer would – soaking up the sun along the shores of Lake Michigan. The relaxing sounds of the waves coupled with Haese’s already calm demeanor made for a smooth run into victory lane and Haese’s second Vercauteren Memorial win in ten years.
The 1998 MASCS Rookie of the Year picked up his first Vercauteren Memorial win in 1999 at Wisconsin International Raceway. Since that time, Haese has picked up prestigious super late model wins at tracks around the Midwest. His last MASCS race was April 13, 2008 in the Spring Classic at Rockford Speedway.
A second engraving of Haese’s name on the Harold and Regina Vercauteren traveling trophy allowed him to reflect upon his first Vercauteren Memorial win. “That was a real special moment,” said Haese. “It was one of my first big wins in Mid-American before I went on to racing super late models.”
Wheeling the Monte Carlo driven on a weekly basis at 141 by Jesse Fuller, Haese looked as though he had not lost the form which he used to capture three Mid-American championships at the venue earlier in his career. The vehicle, itself, certainly proved capable earlier this season when Fuller took a feature win on May 23.

Nowak Says No Way at Norway

NORWAY, Mich. (June 26, 2009) – No one, no way, no how. Lyle Nowak could not be denied a win in the ‘Eh’ Main at Norway Speedway on Friday night as the Mid-American Stock Car Series made its return to the 1/3-mile oval for the first time in almost 15 years. Bill Prietzel and Mike Beyer made several valiant efforts throughout the 40-lap feature event, but were unable to keep Nowak from making his first trip to victory lane in 2009.
Nowak snatched the lead on the outside from Nick Crawford at the drop of the green, but was unable to build any real estate between himself and the rest of the field. On lap nine, Crawford was close enough to tap Nowak on the rear bumper. Nowak held the lead as Crawford slid up the race track, allowing Beyer to slide into second.
Until a caution for a spin on lap 21, Beyer took several looks, but was unable to find enough space to make his move on Nowak.
The game changed again when Prietzel moved his machine into third on lap 23. Two laps later Matt Pyburn stalled on the front straight while running fifth, setting Prietzel on the outside of the second row for the restart on lap 25.
Prietzel needed only one lap to work his way around Beyer and began pressuring Nowak. Running the inside line to perfection, Nowak made sure that Prietzel was unable to make a move to the inside.
Nowak said he knew Prietzel would not be satisfied for second. “I wasn’t going to give up the bottom. Bill is a really good racer. If he did pass me on the outside, more power to him.”
The same sentiments were echoed by Prietzel. “Lyle was very intelligent the last five laps, doing what any good racer would do,” commented Prietzel. He noted Nowak made sure that if Prietzel was to make the pass into the lead, he would certainly have to work for it.

McClintock Donating 2009 Winnings to Ronald McDonald House
**Become a FAN of Mid-American on Facebook**
Fort Atkinson, Wis. (June 8, 2009) – A proposition is drafted, a presentation is made, and a sponsorship is obtained. At that point, any racer can take a deep breath and give a sigh of relief. It is a load off his or her shoulders. Thanks to the sponsorship income, which will be supplemented by race day winnings during the season, racing is possible in a tough economy.
As this is the story for so many Mid-American Stock Car Series competitors (and racers around the country, for that matter), it is not the case for Tom McClintock. The veteran short-tracker from Onalaska, Wis, will donate all his winnings to one of his primary sponsors, Ronald McDonald House, in 2009.
McClintock has been sponsored by McDonald’s for 10 years. It is time to give something back, he said. “I don't see it as racing for free, I see it as raising funds and awareness for a very worthy cause,” said McClintock.
The primary motivation for McClintock and his team comes from their visits to Ronald McDonald houses. He cites anyone who has visited or will visit a Ronald McDonald House will quickly understand why he and his team made the decision they did.
Originally, McClintock proposed donating half his winnings to Ronald McDonald House and the other half to the MASCS point fund. In early January, the plan was shape-shifted at the Rockford auction with a proposition by another Mid-American competitor, Brian Back, to allow McClintock to donate all his winnings to Ronald McDonald House. The Mid-American competitors on hand overwhelmingly supported the decision.
In exchange for his fundraising efforts this season, McClintock was given the green light by MASCS officials to test the experimental DCA chassis.
A standard Mid-American stock car is built on a used 108 inch metric frame manufactured by General Motors between the years of 1978 and 1988. A DCA chassis is a manufactured version of the same product that has never hit the streets.

New Track Record “Back”ed with a Win in Dells Duel One
Become a FAN of Mid-American on Facebook
Wisconsin Dells, WI (May 30, 2009) – Brian Back went where no other Mid-American Stock Car Series competitor dared on Saturday night, the high groove at Dells Raceway Park. With 20 laps remaining in the Dells Duel Part One, Back jumped out of the freight train on the inside lane and took his machine into the high line where he stormed past the competition and into victory lane.
The night started out well for the Bac-Kar racing entry as Back set fast time and a new Dells Raceway Park Mid-American track record. His time of 14.470 seconds bested a lap of 14.499 set by Kyle Shear last July. An incredible day at the track could not have come at a better time for Back who was disappointed with his effort from one week ago at his home track in Plover, WI.
“I think I had the home track ‘disadvantage’ at Golden Sands,” claimed the former Golden Sands Speedway Superstock champion. “I brought the same set up that always worked and wasn’t willing to change anything, and it just didn’t work. [At Dells Raceway Park], I am willing to try new stuff.”
After several cautions early in the Dells Duel Part One, it seemed as though Back and the rest of the Mid-American contingent would be racing for second behind DRP standout Mike Lichtfeld. Lichtfeld snatched the lead from Matt Pyburn on lap two of the 50 lap event, as Pyburn struggled to keep control of his Monte Carlo.
Control seemed to be in the hands of Lichtfeld as he survived two separate restarts with Tom McClintock and Kyle Shear breathing down his neck. After a caution for a tangle between Pyburn and Bill Prietzel on the front straight, the outside line was not a feasible option for Shear. The inaugural Mid-American winner at DRP in 2007 retreated further in the field until retiring with four laps remaining due to overheating.
Lacking a stout challenge from the high line, McClintock remained in line behind Lichtfeld, waiting for the current Mid-American/Superstock point leader at DRP to make a mistake. Unfortunately for McClintock, that opportunity never arose as Lichtfeld solidly held his line from lap ten until the checkered flew on lap 50.
During that point Back decided to make his move. With the field single file in front of him for approximately 20 laps, the Rudolph, WI racer knew he had to take a chance.
“Everyone was racing single file in line on the bottom,” said the second-year MASCS driver in victory lane. “I wasn’t sure if the move was going to work, but I knew I was ready to try it.”
